Lithotripsy
Lithotripsy is a surgical procedure that utilizes sound waves ( also known as high-energy shock waves) to disintegrate kidney stones – allowing the fragments to then pass out of the body through the urinary system.
- general or epidural anesthesia may be used
- patient lies on an exam table on top of a soft, water-filled cushion
- high-energy waves are passed through the body to reach the kidney stones for approximately 45 minutes or until the stones are disintegrated
