Sphincterotomy

An anal sphincterotomy involves making an incision in the sphincter muscle in order to treat chronic anal fissures (painful tears in the lining of the anus).

  • general or local anesthesia may be used
  • procedure may also involve removal of any skin tags near the anal fissure
  • surgeon will make a small cut on the anal sphincter muscle, allowing it to relax, stretch and take pressure off of the fissure
