For 23 years, Dr. John Martin has practiced medicine in Lafayette, Louisiana in the fields of pain management and anesthesiology. Dr. Martin’s heritage is from Louisiana. His father was a retired naval officer from St. Francisville, Louisiana. His mother was from Hammond, where her degree was in social work. Their combined influence of discipline and hard work in conjunction with the aspects of reasoning helped shape his character, providing the foundation which carried him through his years of schooling and into his professional career. After finishing high school in Baton Rouge, Dr. Martin attended Louisiana State University where he obtained his Bachelors of Science degree in Microbiology. The next four years he attended medical school at LSU Medical School in New Orleans. Internship training in internal medicine and residency in anesthesiology and pain management were at Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans, Louisiana. Board certifications followed by the American Society of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Pain Medicine. Dr. Martin’s medical practice has been with the same group of doctors he helped start over twenty years ago. Dr. Martin maintains an active license to practice medicine and surgery by the LA State Board of Medicine. His license is current and has always been in good standing. Dr. Martin’s pain management practice consists of the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain disorders. Patients are treated on a referral basis typically from other physicians and family members, where they are evaluated after their histories were reviewed. Additional diagnostic studies are obtained when required in order to make a diagnosis and to formulate a comprehensive treatment plan, which may encompass injection procedures, prescribed medication and monitoring and also consultations for manual therapy, vocational rehabilitation, psychiatric and surgical intervention. In our society, opioid addiction is prevalent. Before prescribing controlled substances, Dr. Martin first establishes realistic goals in both pain control and functional improvement as well as educates the patients on the associated risks. Patients are reevaluated at office appointment examinations and are monitored through state sponsored web based programs and care is coordinated with area pharmacists and other prescribers in an effort to optimize treatment and as well as to deter misuse. In his practice one of the impressions on Dr. Martin is that education and learning do not end with formal training. Medicine is constantly moving forward and a physician has to stay on the leading edge of new research and developments. Medications and interventions that work on one patient may not be effective on another patient. Dr. Martin’s management draws on his clinical experience and just as important; on his continued education for which he completes 60 hours of continuing medical education annually. By staying on the forefront of new medical advancements, he is also able to educate his patients so that they may be a more active participant in their medical care. Current memberships held by Dr. Martin include the American Society of Anesthesiology, the America Board of Pain Medicine, the Louisiana Society of Anesthesiologists and the Lafayette Parish Medical Society.
