Lumbar Decompression
Lumbar decompression is a surgical procedure utilized to relieve pain caused by pinched nerves in the back. The procedure involves trimming the facet joints along the spine in order to relieve pressure on the nerves.
- general anesthesia is typically used
- surgeon makes a two- to five-inch incision along the spine
- surgeon dissects the back muscle and removes the lamina (a bony structure on the vertebra)
- the facet joints are then trimmed to relieve pressure on the nerves
